Went to Cafe Concerto last night. Phoned in a reservation before the event. Spoke with the chef/owner of the business. Mentioned to him that our group (4 people) had never been there before. He made no mention of the fact that there is no booze or vino in the establishment. It was raining hard outside (not his fault), but after we got inside the building and found out it was a BYOB restaurant, we really wondered why the owner did not mention this to us when we phoned in. SO one of our guests got back out into the rainy night (downpour actually), and headed to the nearest market to buy some wine. Meantime, back at the gig, the other guests ordered some salad that had small pieces of salted bread and a few small slices of tomato on the side. Guest buying the wine returned with some bottles, and then joined in eating some of this salad. Salad was nothing special, although the greens were fresh and leafy, the tomatoes were fairly small, lacking any hearty "Italian" taste. On the menu, there was one type of spaghetti that you could get with many types of sauce and meat selections - "angel hair". There was also ravioli, and penne. I am only guessing that the ravioli was home made, but the other pasta was not. My penne was certainly not home made. The sauces on any give dish were tasty, not over seasoned, and not just slopped on the pasta . . . this aspect of the dinner was done right - in other words, the pasta was not "floating in sauce" like some restaurants prepare pasta and sauce. Generally speaking, there was more than we could eat, and the guests all gave the food a 7 out of 10 rating. Ambiance inside the place got a 3 out of ten though. This is a small place and it just cannot be that hard to "dress\ it up a little - I know, because I have been to Italy, where the chef says he is from, so I wonder why he doesn\t do a better job of fixing the interior up a little bit to make it acceptable ? Seems like the whole place is being run on a shoe string, and additionally,

The terrible parking should have been a sign to just keep moving. But it was getting late and we were hungry. We snagged one of maybe 9 street parking spots (don\t park in the alley lot beside the restaurant, it\s for a burger place and apparently they will tow). The inside of the restaurant was small. Since there weren\t many people there (again, writing on the wall), we were immediately seated. The restaurant had several pasta options. I was torn between the penne with tomato sauce or the more expensive penne with Ragu / meat sauce. I went with the latter, not realizing that the total lack of any red sauce would make the pasta very dry. When the food came, I requested some extra red sauce on top of the pasta. The waitress was shocked and appalled. She asked me several times, loudly, what I meant. I guess she had never gotten a request for red sauce on pasta before? Anyway, she took my plate and huffed away. Then the owner?/cook got involved. He was evidently very insulted that I had asked for red sauce and demanded multiple times, again loudly, to know what was wrong with the dish. I repeated that all I wanted was some red sauce on my pasta, accepted fault for ordering the wrong thing, but that I was obviously still going to eat the meal - I just wanted them to add some red sauce. You would have thought I had thrown the food on the wall by how outraged he was. They ended up adding some red sauce , of course with a ridiculous up charge. The food was fine, but the service and treatment of customers left a bad taste in my mouth. Will not return, do not recommend.

Very small restaurant run by an Italian chef with penchant for sauces. 4 cheese ravioli was terrific. Portions were not huge, but were adequate. It is a limited menu, as one would expect from a restaurant run by two people. People seem to have an issue with the lack of bread baskets, so if this is an issue for you, either pay for extra, or better yet, stay away so that I can get a table when I want to. There are only a few tables in this small place, so you may want to make a reservation if you are worried. There is hard to find parking out back via the alley. The waitress was pretty cute too.
