great Lao food in Vang Vieng
Vang Vieng gets somewhat of a bad rap for limited food and sameness of menus. In January, the restaurants were near empty, the exceptions being "Friends" bars and the LP-touted Norkeo''s (we thought it decent, not memorable). Then we sat down at unsigned Davon''s, 3 doors up from Ban Sabai Bungalows and Elephant Crossing and directly across from the hospital''s NW border -- just four tidy tables off the sidewalk. Chef-owner Davon modestly pointed to herself when we asked the place''s name. We asked and found that the ubiquitous "fried" on the menu really means sauteed or stir-fried. So we feasted on sauteed fish with green pepper and onions ("fried fish"), sweet-and-sour tofu with eggplant, and fruit shakes -- all for $8. The best meal of our Laos trip. Likewise, we had very good Lao food two doors further up in an (unnamed) brand new place boasting a tall glass wall onto the river. So our tip for Vang Vieng visitors is to read between the menu lines: a yummy n
