We visited Newtown last night to see a comedy performance and afterwards went for a walk to find somewhere for dinner. We stumbled across Steki Taverna by accident; it was down a lane way off the main street. When we opened the door it was a cosy, dimly lit, lively restaurant. We asked for a table for two and the waitress checked if we had a reservation (which we didn\t as walk ins). She checked availability and the Manager came back to advise they could fit us in. The wine list was substantial with the majority available for purchase by the bottle, so I ordered the house red (available by the glass) which wasn a nice drop. There was a decent selection of beers (including Greek options) as well as other spirits, soft drinks etc, and my partner ordered the Mythos beer (also enjoyable). The menu had a decent amount of options listed including vegetarian options. They also had a set 3 course menu available. Entree was garlic pita and marinated baby octopus. The pita bread was SO fresh, soft and amazing, probably the best I\ve had for a while. The octopus was tender and the flavours were excellent. For our mains we ordered chicken oregano which was chicken breast tenders cooked in a creamy oregano/lemon/garlic sauce. This was nice though I felt the chicken was a teeny bit dry, and while I enjoyed it, the show stopper was the slow cooked/BBQ lamb. It was, quite simply, the best lamb I have ever eaten. The flavours perfectly balanced and the meat so tender, soft and moist. Prices were reasonable, not cheap - but not overly expensive. The staff were friendly and helpful and familiar with the menu, which was great. They had a 3 piece band playing traditional Greek music which was awesome, and at just the right level. We could still talk to and hear one another. At the conclusion of our meal they brought us the bill, along with a small plate holding two small pieces of baklava, which I thought was a nice touch. Ability to pay by card (at the table) or cash. All in all a grea

Went here for a friend\s birthday. Numbers were limited, as the venue was at capacity. I\d say maybe 80 people in total. We had the $50 banquet, which was the most expensive of the banquet options. Food was nice, though the chicken souvlaki seemed less than 100% fresh, and the marinated octopus was a touch overcooked. Staff were fine, though I was never asked if I wanted to order a drink, even when those around me were. Then there was the live music. Great idea, to bring in some atmosphere, however in such a small space, with nothing to dampen the sound, and everything amplified, it was far too loud. Having the band play acoustically would have been more than enough to fill the space, without forcing the customers to either shout at each other all night (and even then, only at the person next to you, as any further than that on long tables is impossible), or sit and not talk. I wanted to catch up with friends I hadn\t seen in awhile, but any real conversation was near impossible. Also, don\t expect to be able to dance much, as there is very little room. 3 people at a time and they ran out of space. I had people\s butts hitting me in the elbow all night while trying to eat. Apparently they want to mimic the tavernas of Greece with the music and dancing, but the venue just isn\t big enough to do it all. By closing time at 2am, my ears were ringing, and I had a sore throat from shouting. It may be one of the oldest Greek places in Sydney, but there are better places around. Given it\s location, there is minimal parking, and only a 2 hour limit from 8am - 10pm in surrounding streets. Public transport or a cab would be the way to go.
