Arriving in the Tortona area to visit the Mudec (Museum of Culture - highly recommended!), we were looking for a nice bar for a snack lunch although it was nearly 3 p.m. Seeing sun umbrellas and tables outside, and then a small slate stating "open for breakfast and lunch", we wandered up the ramp to the first floor entrance.... then wondered if we had made a mistake and it was really a soup kitchen, as there was no sign over the door and just a huge, heavy metal door to pull open. Once inside, another sort of doubt: we were followed by two dodgy looking punters into a huge but rather dark room with low tables and cushions, and a long central bar area lit by thousands of hanging light bulbs that looked like upside-down glasses, and a rather showy waitress in attendance. Had we walked into a daytime "house of tolerance" or similar? We were quite wrong, as we then saw cakes and fruit salad in the bar area, and a waiter sweeping the floor with a bored air. However, when we enquired whether we could eat something, it all changed: we were brought a menu of the day with a reasonable choice of fresh and appetising-sounding dishes. We, at this point the only customers present, chose an ample table opposite the side overlooking the road, admiring the kitchen in full view - about 3 staff working and hygiene looked good. I chose lamb cutlets and my husband a raw artichoke salad with grana slivers. Both were delicious, beautifully presented and served quickly. My husband also liked his beer. The bill was very reasonable for Milan, about 30 euros for the pair of us, though I have seen some reviews for the evening find it overpriced. I would definitely go again at lunchtime. The bathroom decor is black and not to my taste, but everything was clean, and for a disco perhaps it is not out of place.
