Hidden in the basement below a heath food shop on Paseo de la Florida, you could be forgiven for not noticing El Vergel, which would really be a bit of a shame. The restaurant seems to be setting itself up as a bit special - nice decor, linen tablecloths and classy atmosphere make it perfect for a romantic dinner or special occasion. In addition to be 100% vegetarian, they have good food awareness and can cope with vegan and gluten-free requirements. They even have a gluten free beer, which immediately impressed me. The food itself was more of a mixed bag. I really enjoyed my asparagus cream soup starter, and my roasted aubergine main course was also delicious. My partner\s moussaka, however, was a little disappointing and seemed to be a little lacking in seasoning and oven time. Perhaps we should have ordered a salad or side-dish to go with our main courses, but both seemed a bit incomplete, somehow. Most of the desserts seemed not to be gluten-free so I settled for ice cream, which was nice enough, but you can\t really go wrong with ice cream, can you? Vegetarian dining in Spain can be a bit hit and miss, so I was really pleased to find El Vergel. However, although it gets a lot right, there were a few aspects in which it didn\t seem quite to deliver, either by trying too hard, or by not trying hard enough. It\s definitely worth a visit, and I enjoyed my meal there, but it wouldn\t be my first choice for vegetarian food in Madrid.
