Not so long ago, you just couldn\t get Mexican food for love or money in Kyoto. Now there are a few places, all with things to recommend them. El Bonito goes for the dive: thick with cigarette smoke, beer in bottles, winking Christmas lights. So far, so good, if you like that sort of thing. The main problem with El Bonito is that it\s too mild. I know the Japanese traditionally get very nervous about spicy foods, but these days everybody eats Korean and Sichuan and hot curry -- everybody, anyway, who\s going to stay out late drinking in a Mexican dive. But there\s not nearly enough chiles in the place. That said, the food is pretty decent. It\s a little expensive if you\re planning to eat a meal, but very solid and fair if you\re eating snacks with your drinks. Beer is well priced. I\m told the margaritas are good, but I haven\t had one yet. If you\re in it for the food, go one short block east and 1.5 blocks north, just short of Oike-dori, and eat at La Jolla. After it closes, if you\re in the mood, come to El Bonito and drink and smoke and eat some Mexican junk food.
