Fresh tempura with the finest ingredients and a great chef, you don\t want to miss this place. Small tempura bar and the chef worked very hard to communicate in english to us what we were eating. Wonderful service and the food was over the top great!

The meal was wonderful! I chose the higher price set dinner. The chef, Mr. Inoue, spoke a little bit of English, mainly names of the food he was serving, supplemented by his English dictionary for Japanese food. I arrived early, ahead of other customers. They open for dinner at 5 PM. This led to my having Inoue-san\s full attention. He explained each item he presented to me. I was served soup, beautifully presented sashimi, shrimp, mushroom, salad, gobo, lotus root, turnip soup, thin slices chestnut fried like potato chips, tofu, gingko nuts, fish, pepper, sweet potato, kabo squash, tempura vegetables over rice, and a lemon sorbet. Everything was prepared with a professional care and style. It had to look good on the plate, as well as taste good. It was an unforgettable meal. Finding the restaurant was a challenge. The name, kitamura, is written in hiragana (phonetic alphabet), rather than kanji (the more complicated Chinese characters). The restaurant is down a narrow hall from the Pontocho walk. Look for the better lit and better signed Harukami restaurant (written in kanji, where the haru is the character for spring). It is to the immediate right of that. Hope you find it and enjoy the meal.

A local had told me about this place in Pontocho which serves great tempura, so I walked several times up and down the alley trying to find it. To be honest, it\s difficult to find, as the entrance is actually further in through a narrow passageway, between 2 other restaurant fronts. And by the time I found it, it was just past 8.30pm and they were actually winding down already (many restaurants close early in Japan, compared to other countries in Asia). Anyway, the waitress asked the chef if he could take another diner, and he agreed. By then, I was the only diner in the restaurant that sits 10 persons. The chef didn\t speak English and looked rather stern, but as the oil in the brass tempura fryer warmed up, so did he. And then, my meal of fantastic tempura began. The chef explained to me (as best as he could, for which my very basic knowledge of certain ingredient names in Japanese helped) what he prepared each time he put something down on the tray before me, and he would tell me if it was to be eaten with the tempura sauce or salt (there was a selection of 3 types of salt). The tempura was fried just right and the ingredients - prawns, fish, mushrooms, vegetables, bamboo shoots and even tofu - were fresh and bursting with flavour. I was rather sorry as the meal wound down to a close - because after a long, hard search, dining on tempura at Tempura Kitamura was definitely a most satisfying experience.
